Engineer. Founder. Investor.

Building systems
that scale.
And businesses too.

I'm Sohail, a software engineer at AWS who is just as curious about how great businesses are built, grown and sold. Based in Seattle, by way of Kansas City.

Work

Engineering where
money moves.

97.9% faster seller fee corrections, from ~4 hours to ~5 minutes
8s → 4ms p99 query latency on the daily seller-payout batch
6 marketplace regions served by an event-driven service I architected
2025 to Present Seattle, WA

Amazon Web Services

Software Development Engineer

  • Authored and drove approval of the design for a seller-payable data-correction system spanning three new marketplace operators (Brazil, India and Chile), and now lead its implementation.
  • Launched AWS Marketplace Brazil for foreign vendors: a Java handler on Lambda, SQS and S3 with a 30-day payout hold, cross-account KMS audit trails and idempotent DLQ processing.
  • Built a SOX-compliance monitoring service on Lambda, DynamoDB and EventBridge that catches stuck transactions and auto-files tickets on SLA breach.
  • Root-caused a full-table scan paging on-call every morning; a composite index took p99 from ~8s to ~4ms.
2024 to 2025 Kansas City, MO

Trueparkings

Software Engineer

  • Built a session-billing engine on license-plate telemetry, processing 12,000 sessions a day.
  • Implemented idempotent Stripe payments with DB transaction locking to survive concurrent peak reservations.
  • Designed a Redis cache over PostgreSQL for real-time occupancy at ~8ms p99.

Ventures

Build it. Grow it.
Own the outcome.

I approach business the way private equity does, find something with room to grow, scale it with discipline, and know when to exit.

Founder & Owner · Kansas City, MO

The Budget Wheels

Acquired

A Kansas City pre-owned dealership that grew revenue 567% and was acquired 1.2 years after it was founded.

The edge was financing. Most small dealerships rely on a single lender, so buyers with thin or imperfect credit walk away empty handed. The Budget Wheels partnered with multiple lenders, which meant more customers drove home approved. A dedicated sales team ran the business day to day.

The exit followed the private equity playbook: build real value, then sell from a position of strength.

Caelum Asset

In formation

Caelum Asset is a private equity vehicle designed to acquire and grow small businesses. The idea is simple: pool patient capital, protect it, then put it to work in businesses with real room to grow.

  1. 01

    Pool

Partners contribute flexibly into Caelum Asset. Ownership is tracked in units priced at same-day NAV, so every stake is transparent and fair.

  2. 02

    Preserve

While capital accumulates, it sits in broad-market index funds. No leverage, no personal debt, no speculation. Principal comes first.

  3. 03

    Acquire & grow

Capital is deployed into an operating business, with the goal of compounding its value many times over.

  • No personal credit risk
  • Unanimous vote on structural decisions
  • Dual control on every withdrawal
  • Full ledger transparency for every partner

Projects

Things I build
for the love of it.

Software is only half of it. I also love building business models, and I've built them for clients.

AI · Reliability

Triager

An on-call agent that turns CloudWatch alarms into diagnoses in under 20 seconds. Read-only MCP servers give the LLM least-privilege access to logs and DLQs, and a 150-incident golden dataset benchmarks four models on accuracy, latency and cost.

  • Python
  • FastAPI
  • MCP
  • Anthropic API
  • SQS

Distributed systems

Distributed Rate Limiter

A low-latency Go service that governs API traffic across a multi-node cluster. Token buckets run as atomic Redis Lua scripts to eliminate race conditions, with gRPC over HTTP/2 between nodes.

  • Go
  • Redis
  • gRPC
  • Docker
  • EC2

Fintech · In development

Noether

A double-entry ledger with a conservation law you can test. An append-only journal, paired with a deterministic simulation harness that injects crashes mid-commit and proves money is never created or destroyed.

  • JVM
  • Ledgers
  • Fault injection

Business Models

Business models built for clients, mapping how a company makes money, what each customer is worth, and what it takes to scale. Every model is designed to turn an idea into a business that can grow.

  • Revenue models
  • Unit economics
  • Growth strategy
